Then from the right, the second airplane approached and crashed into the second tower. I remember thinking, "Our lives will never be the same again" and then I screamed.
Shortly after, the towers collapsed. It was surreal and frankly, beyond anything I could grasp. New York became a ghost town. In the week before I returned home, our worst fears about extremism were affirmed and multiplied.
We had a new enemy. As my plane flew over the immense destruction, I mourned for America and those who lost their lives. Those images of destruction remain vivid in my mind today. But I also recall the strong determination and bond we created among ourselves to carry our nation forward into recovery.
We rose together for the sake of America. I believe we can do that again. My mother was a Holocaust survivor. As we discussed her life in the Nazi ghettos and concentration camps, she said sometimes it was hard for her to believe it actually happened. When I think about that September morning, I re-live those anticipatory moments when the reality of what was about to happen solidified and I witnessed the actual impact.
Even today, I can't believe it and can't forget it. We were both at work about 35 miles away on Long Island when we saw the smoke from the attack. We immediately went through the painful task of locating our kids who were in imminent danger. My daughter was working on the 19th floor of one of the towering office buildings two blocks from the Twin Towers. Their next stop was the Twin Towers. Fortunately, they were warned in time to stay in Brooklyn.
