Casting or trolling can catch these fish. The 3,acre Lewis River reservoir is located on the border of Clark and Cowlitz counties about a half hour east of Interstate 5 at Woodland. This is a deep lake and muskie fishing may come on a little slowly here but should be good by July through September.

More: Lake Merwin Fishing. This 2,acre lake has lots of coves, fingers and island, with a shoreline largely lined with residential housing. Bank access is limited to some parks and other public access, but boaters will be able to reach plenty of water.

More: Lake Tapps Fishing. This 2,acre lake in Lewis County produced a previous state record tiger muskie of about 31 pounds and is capable of growing bigger ones. There are stumps, boulders, points and coves, plus ample weed beds and a fair number of docks, to provide a variety of potential muskie-holding cover. Mayfield Lake is formed by a dam on the Cowlitz River and includes two large arms where the Cowlitz and Tilton rivers enter.

It is located southeast of Chehalis and only about 20 minutes east of Interstate 5 on U. Good access is at the large Ike Kinswa State Park on the upper end, at a Lewis County park along the highway and at the private Lake Mayfield Resort south of the highway on the lower reservoir.

More: Mayfield Lake Fishing. The tiger muskie is a sterile cross between northern pike Esox lucius and muskellunge, or true muskie Esox masquinongy. All members of the pike family have the same general appearance, having a long, cylindrical-shaped body with the lobe-shaped dorsal and ventral fins far back on the body near the tail. Their head is somewhat compressed and they have a prominent duckbill-shaped snout.

It is the angler's responsibility to know the difference between the tiger muskie and northern pike. Tiger muskies are classified as game fish while northern pike are classified as prohibited. Average is inches at two years old, inches at three years old. Mature adults are inches and can grow to an excess of 30 pounds.

Tiger muskies have earned the nickname "fish of a thousand casts", but putting in the time and effort to catch one of these trophy fish is well worth it. Adult tiger muskies are voracious predators that prefer large, soft-rayed fish like northern pikeminnow and suckers as the primary items in their diet. Because of this, successful anglers sometimes use large lures to mimic large prey that muskies prefer. Other lures such as bucktail spinners, spinnerbaits, glide baits, jerk baits, and wooden or plastic plugs work well.

Some people have also used large casting spoons with some success. There is a large amount of information online about tiger muskie lures that work well in Washington. Tiger muskies typically inhabit shallow weedy bays, near the tops of the weed beds during the warmer months from the end of May until the end of September.

They can also be found hiding near or under hard structure such as logs or docks. Paul, Minnesota, the original group of 13 avid muskie fishermen concentrated on continual improvement of the muskie resource through rearing and stocking efforts and sound conservation practices. There are 37 of the lower 48 states with active muskie stocking programs. They have become a national voice for the protection of the muskie species. Tiger Muskies are sterile. You can't keep them under 50 inches: Let them do their job: Eating N. RE: 1st Muskies Inc. Post by muskyhunter » Tue May 01, pm Awesome, Thanks for the information. Hopefully the state can continue what it has started and will support this great fishery.

I am glad that there will be a chapter here in this state. I will be there at the meeting!! Any reports of any new plants in Tapps,Merwin or Mayfield lakes?

The more the merrier, all are welcome: old muskie pros, new guys wanting to learn and all in-between. I am pumped Pass it on! Post by muskie guy » Wed May 02, pm This is the best thing yet for us muskie anglers! Thanks to every one for their efforts in putting this together. Post by dlt » Thu May 03, am outstanding! My Fishing Apps. They have done a great job in the Mid-West helping people learn more about this great game fish. Did you know that the concept of "Catch and Release" was started by Muskies Inc.

I can't wait to see this happen. If you are new to Musky fishing and you see a fish follow your lure to the boat try using the figure "8" pattern. The figure "8" will sometimes trigger these fish to strike. Remember to always keep the lure moving.

If you do not catch a Musky right away do not be discouraged. The Musky is the legendary fish of 10, casts!!!! In my opinion some of the more high percentage baits to use are probably Buck-tails, Rapala's, and Jointed Pikie-minnows.

With this selection you can fish just about any situation. Hey let's go fishin'!!!! Post by Don Wittenberger » Sat May 05, pm Yes, I think it's a good thing for tiger musky anglers in Washington to get organized and get involved with issues involving the management of this fishery, such as stocking and catch regulations. The bass and walleye anglers are well organized, and not all of them are on your side where muskies are concerned, so you need the clout of a club behind you. I hope to make the meeting.

Does anyone want me to bring my Wisconsin musky boat down for show-and-tell? The 3 of you could try out Mayfield the next day! And I agree this Chapter getting off the ground is real important to the future of our muskie fishery. I printed up some nice colored flyers promoting the meeting. Used a great photo of Mark's 41 incher from Tapps.

I also pasted them to the front door glass at Sportco in Fife. Gonnason's Marina in Kent also had me put them on both entrances so anglers and boater could see them. Just in case I put one in the window at the Denny's where we are meeting. And Todd down at Auburn Sports and Marine was way cool about not only putting them up by the front door glass, but he showed me a few of his favorite lures, too. Now, this trip would have been a little faster if I had left my money in the Dodge; had to pick up a few new lures there!

Kyle is a transplant from Minny-soda, too. So, now the question is Even you anglers east of the Cascades; this will be your chapter, too, with a voice in all things. Maybe Tiffany's? Newman, Silver? This will be YOUR chapter, all of us, across the state, with a unified voice for the fishery. So, who can I send a couple of flyers to? Even one or two would help.. Let's get the word out. I can send as many as you like.
